About this bus lane
Part of Sheffield's Connecting Sheffield bus priority programme — camera enforcement began 2026.
Abbeydale Road does not have one set of bus lane hours, and that is what catches drivers out. On 7 July 2025 the council made the lane between Hastings Road and Bannerdale Road operate at all times, around the clock, while the other lengths of Abbeydale Road stayed on the weekday peaks of 7.30am to 9.30am and 4pm to 6.30pm, Monday to Friday.
Assuming the whole road is peak-only is the mistake to avoid. Buses, taxis, pedal cycles and solo motorcycles may use the lane whenever it is in force.
The camera that enforces it sits at the corner of Miller Road and went live on 1 June 2026; the council has not published which of the two regimes applies at that exact point, so read the signs at the start of the lane you are entering.

The grounds that win here are that your vehicle was not in the bus lane during its operating times shown above, that it was an exempt vehicle, or that the signage did not make the restriction clear. It is worth doing: Sheffield City Council accepted 36% of the 14,845 formal challenges it received in 2025/26 (figures from its own FOI response). Note that paying the £35 discounted rate accepts liability and closes the case, so challenge before you pay.
