Who Can Drive in a Bus Lane? Taxis, Motorbikes, Cyclists & More

Which vehicles can legally use UK bus lanes? The rules for taxis, private hire, motorcycles, cyclists, electric cars and blue badge holders — and why every lane is different.

The golden rule: read the sign

There is no single national rule for who can use a bus lane. The blue rectangular sign at the start of the lane (and repeated along it) shows exactly which vehicles are permitted and during which hours. If your vehicle type isn't pictured, you can't use it — full stop.

Bus lanes vs bus gates

A bus lane is a marked lane on a road that other traffic can still drive alongside. A bus gate is a short section of road where only permitted vehicles may pass at all — there's no lane for general traffic. Bus gates catch far more drivers out because there's no alternative lane, and many operate 24/7.

When CAN you enter a bus lane?

  • To cross it when turning into or out of a side road or property (don't travel along it)
  • Outside its signed hours of operation (if it's not 24-hour)
  • If directed to by a police officer or to allow an emergency vehicle to pass (keep evidence)
