About this bus gate
The outbound bus and tram gates between Regent Street and Cavendish Street operate 4pm to 6.30pm, Monday to Friday — an evening-peak restriction only, so the road is open to everyone the rest of the time. A camera has enforced this gate since 1 August 2010.
A second pair of gates further up Glossop Road, between Gell Street and Wilkinson Lane, keeps the same hours but the council does not record a camera there. Buses, taxis, pedal cycles and authorised vehicles may pass through.
Solo motorcycles may not — Sheffield permits them in bus lanes only, never in bus gates. A private hire vehicle counts as an authorised vehicle only if it carries council-approved side markings; an unmarked or out-of-area one does not.
