About this bus gate
This bus gate runs around the clock. Only buses, taxis, private hire vehicles, pedal cycles and exempt emergency vehicles may pass it.
There are two cameras here and both carry the same rule: one at the York Place junction with Trafalgar Street, catching northbound traffic, and one at the St George’s Place junction with Trafalgar Street, catching southbound traffic. Pedal cycles are permitted.
An earlier version of this page warned that they might not be, because the older York Place and St Georges Place bus lanes listed only buses, taxis and private hire vehicles. Those lanes were revoked in December 2021, when Valley Gardens was rebuilt and these bus gates replaced them.
Transcribed from the Brighton & Hove (Bus Lanes) Consolidation Order 2018 as amended, Schedule 1 Part 3.1 “Bus Gates At Any Time” items 6 (York Place) and 4 (St George’s Place), both inserted by Amendment Order No.2 2021 (TRO-09-2020, in operation 20 December 2021), which also revoked the Part 1.1 York Place and St Georges Place bus lanes at items 37 to 39 and 42 to 44, read together with the council’s “Bus gates” page, which names this camera as York Place Northbound and St Georges Place Southbound and states that only buses, cycles, private hire vehicles, taxis and exempt emergency vehicles may drive through; the sealed orders are on the Traffic Penalty Tribunal’s traffic order register at tro.tpt.gov.uk/brighton-and-hove/.

If Brighton & Hove City Council rejects them it must issue a Notice of Rejection, and you can then appeal free to the Traffic Penalty Tribunal. Its adjudicators are lawyers independent of the enforcing authority, and their decision is binding on both sides. The grounds that win here are that your vehicle was not in the bus gate during its operating times (24/7), that it was an exempt vehicle, or that the approach signage did not give enough warning before the point of no return. It is worth doing: Brighton & Hove City Council accepted 13% of the 6,785 formal challenges it received in 2025/26, and of the 418 that went on to the tribunal, 83 succeeded (figures from its own FOI response). Note that paying the £35 discounted rate accepts liability and closes the case, so challenge before you pay.
