About this bus gate
Unusually for Brighton, this restriction is not round the clock: it applies every day from 8am to 8pm, and outside those hours other traffic may use it. Buses, taxis, private hire vehicles and cyclists are permitted.
An earlier version of this page could not say which of two North Street restrictions the camera enforced — an eastbound contraflow lane that applies at any time, or the bus-only route that runs 8am to 8pm — and warned that private hire vehicles were excluded from both. Both points are now settled.
The council names this camera as North Street / Dyke Road Westbound, and the contraflow lane runs eastbound, so the camera can only be enforcing the westbound bus-only route. And private hire vehicles were added to every vehicle list in that part of the order in 2021, so they are exempt.

It is worth doing: Brighton & Hove City Council accepted 13% of the 6,785 formal challenges it received in 2025/26, and of the 418 that went on to the tribunal, 83 succeeded (figures from its own FOI response). Note that paying the £35 discounted rate accepts liability and closes the case, so challenge before you pay.
