About this bus gate
The bus gate operates at any time. The traffic order behind it sets no hours at all, so the restriction runs 24 hours a day, every day — the council’s public wording, that it enforces "when public bus services are running", is a loose description of that rather than a set of times.
Only buses may pass. There is no exemption for taxis, private hire vehicles or motorcycles, which makes this one of the strictest bus gates in the country; the only exceptions are emergencies, removing an obstruction, and building, maintenance or utility work that cannot be done from another road.
The prohibition is written to catch motor vehicles, so a pedal cycle is not caught by it, but there is no cycle provision here and the council describes the gate as open to buses alone. Camera enforcement began in February 2024, days after the order came into force.
