About this bus gate
The strictest of South Gloucestershire's bus restrictions and the one to watch: unlike the council's reserved bus lanes, this bus gate does NOT exempt taxis, private hire vehicles, motorcycles or cycles — only buses, community buses and school buses may pass. From the New Road, Stoke Gifford (Prohibition of Use by Vehicles except Buses, Community Buses and School Buses) Order 2009, in operation 16 March 2009.
The order's works, utility, emergency and premises-access exemptions apply only to vehicles travelling east. The council publishes the 21-day 50% discount window but not the penalty amount online; the £70/£35 charge was confirmed by the council under FOI (FOI-2026-003852, July 2026).
